Welcome to The First Weyr!
The First Weyr is a forum roleplay based off the Dragonriders of Pern series written by Anne and Todd McCaffrey. Our setting is the dawn of the First Pass, the very beginning of Pern. It is a time of enormous change and significance for the Pernese--and though the colonists may not realize it, the actions they take now will shape Pernese society for millennia to come. Thread endangers the colony's very existence, but there is hope: the first dragon clutch has hatched, whether or not the colonists are ready for it.
The First Weyr is a canon site. We have made some minor changes for convenience, and we are also following a storyline that is an AU (Alternate Universe) compared to the books, so as to make room for player characters. Canon characters were present for the sake of preserving the names of future locations; however, most have been killed off either in Threadfall or in the efforts to discover more about Thread, to allow players to take on leadership positions. Future locations will be named in honor of the fallen.
No canon dragonrider characters are present either--these roles are meant to be filled in by the players. The plot of our site focuses on the first dragonriders, the challenges they face, and how they overcome them.
We are open to players of all skill levels, and you do not need to be familiar with Pern to join; we have many resources on-site in our Guidebook to get you acquainted with the setting.
Joining & Account Set-up
First, you should start by reading through all topics in the Important Information forum. It's a lot to take in, so you don't need to read it all at once! If you are familiar with canon Pern, the most essential threads on site canon, setting, and plot are those labelled 01, 02, 03, 04, and 08. It's also a good idea to have a look at our character creation guidelines to see what is and what isn't acceptable. We also recommend giving thread 05. Pernese Dragons a read to ensure you're aware of how we interpret dragons and Impression here.
The next thing you should do is to register your OOC account. This will serve as your primary account to which you'll attach all your character accounts.
Once you're registered, you can post your character's application for approval here. Be sure to fill out the character profile form when you do so. If you are not sure what character to make, you can see if we have any available adoptable characters.
Then, you can register your character's account. The username should simply be your character's first and last name, properly capitalized in the following format: Firstname Lastname. On First Weyr, we make use of Jcink's handy sub-account system to make account switching easier. To set up a sub-account, log into your main (OOC) account, and go to the My Controls page. Go to 'Edit Sub-accounts'. Enter the username and password you used for your character's account. You should now be able to freely switch between your main account and your character account! If you have any questions or require assistance, please contact crowfeet.
The next step is to fill out your character's profile with all the relevant information. Profile Topic Number refers to the number at the end of the URL of your character's application. Look for the part at the end that says '?showtopic=##'; that ## is the number you want. Plotter Topic Number refers to the topic number of your thread tracker or plotter; if you have one, you may fill this out, but this is optional. If you wish, you may upload an avatar; images should be no larger than 200px wide and 320px tall.
Once your character is approved and their account is set up, you are free to start posting and plotting with your fellow members! You may make use of our Plotting forum. We also welcome you to join our Discord chat!
If your character is a candidate for bonding to a dragon, please fill out the candidate form with your preferences and PM it to The Red Star.
And that's it! We hope you enjoy your stay at First Weyr, and don't hesitate to contact an admin if you have any questions, concerns, or feedback!

Calendar and Passage of Time
On First Weyr, we follow a 2:1 time dilation. For every two weeks OOC, one month passes IC. The colonists use a 12-month calendar. Landing is located in a tropical climate, and rather than typical seasons there is only a rainy season and a dry season, which each last around 6 months IC. The driest time of year is the winter solstice (or summer solstice for the Northern Continent) and the wettest time of year is the summer solstice (or winter solstice in terms of the Northern Continent).
The seasons and the months they correspond to are as follows.
Dry Season -- Months 3, 4, and 5 // Northern Spring
Dry Season -- Months 6, 7, and 8 // Northern Summer
Rainy Season -- Months 9, 10, and 11 // Northern Autumn
The current IC time and calendar is listed in the forum header. To view upcoming dates and events, please see the site calendar HERE.
Threads may be backdated if desired.
